5G on GoMo
#1
Hi,

Driving around Dublin East Wall and City Centre and Dun Laoghaire yesterday (27 April) was surprised to get 5G service on GoMo.

The service is not visible in Dun Laoghaire this morning.

On a speedtest it was peaking at 150b DL and 60mb UL. I had the impression that the speed was capped.

Anyone else see this?

I saw a few posts mentioning the same on Boards.ie such as this, so it looks like they are testing 5G with some GoMo customers.

While recently in Letterkenny, I borrowed a GoMo SIM to test in my phone, but the phone remained in 4G mode. Going by the Samsung service menu (dial *#0011#), it showed 5G was present, but restricted, like my Three SIM when the 5G add-on expires.

I wonder if the 100Mbps to 150Mbps limit is 5G band related, i.e. that they allow GoMo customers on 5G band n3, but not the high capacity 5G band n78. Like Three, I have heard that Eir is also refarming many of its band 3 cells for 5G, known as 5G band n3. As the bandwidth remains the same (15MHz), there's only a slight change in speed with the 5G signalling on these masts. This is different to the n78 band where Eir has 80 to 85MHz of spectrum.

If your phone is a Samsung phone, you can dial *#0011# to check the 5G technical info the next time your phone shows 5G. With some other Anddroid phones, the App NetMonster can display the 4G and 5G band information.
