Three now operates 5G on Band n1 ARFCN 423130

I noticed something unusual appear in my MikroTik network cell monitor on Three, seeing a second 4G band 3 carrier operating on EARFCN 1275 which I have not seen here in a few years as the carrier was refarmed for 5G on band n3.  The only places Three continued operating the second 4G band 3 carrier was in urban areas where they operate 5G on the high capacity band n78.  

In the following example, I cell locked my Chateau LTE12 on band 20 PCI 127 which previously would have aggregated a very weak 4G band 1 carrier on EARCN 100.  Now it aggregates a very weak 4G band 3 carrier instead on EARFCN 1275:

   

As the Chateau LTE12 only supports 3 Carrier Aggregation, I tried disabling band 3 temporarily and to my surprise it did not aggregate even the very weak band 1 carrier like it used to with that cell lock. 

While I am out of the sync range for my other MikroTik Chateau 5G router to connect on any 5G cell, it has no problem listing 5G cells including on other networks when set to 5G only mode.  Initially it displayed a few distant Eir band n3 cells and then displayed n1 cells on an ARFCN 423130 which I haven't seen before:  

   

Using a 5G NR ARFCN calculator gives 2115.65MHz which is a frequency in Three's 20MHz of band 1 spectrum.

Changing 5G to band n1 provides 20MHz of bandwidth for those with a 5G router within range, 5MHz more than the former band n3 carrier they were using.  Three is also unlikely to switch off the 5G band for energy saving particularly with it being the only 5G band carrier available in rural areas.  

Unfortunately for those with a 4G only router or outside the 5G range limit, this means less 5MHz less bandwidth available from the second 4G carrier.  Worse still, there are many 4G routers incapable of aggregating two band 3 carriers with non contiguous spectrum that were able to aggregate 4G bands 1 and 3.  For example, the Huawei B535 router Three has been providing on 4G broadband contracts does not support band 3+3 CA, but was able to aggregate 4G bands 1+3.

Three is doing "upgrades" in my area too. I lost B1 a few days ago, they had it ON/OFF intermittently now is off permanently. Interestingly enough if  EARFCN 1275 (15MHz) is the primary band, then I can do B3 + B3 + B20, if EARFCN 1700 (20MHz) is the primary band then I can only do B3 + B28.

Either ways I was able to get 300mbps with B1+B3 now I'm only getting 100-120mbps with B3+B3+B20 (15MHz+20MHz+10MHz)

The second B3 would connect only on demand (when throughput is needed), is there any way to force the CA to stay connected permanently?

Playing around with the different APN I noticed that openinternet.ie seems to allow for B3 (1275)+B3(1700)+B20 where other APNs seem to force B3 (1700) + B28 or B3+B3 only. I'll let it run like this for a while, perhaps its just the router not three.

Band 1 now on as off this morning here in Ardee Louth.

Was alternating between 3 and 78, the speed is around 50MB down more bringing my 5G broadband on 3 to around 450MB/50MB

The EARFCN 1275 sector finally came online for the first time on the main mast I pick up since their 5G band reconfiguration, which let me do some CA tests here.

The first issue I ran into is that the MikroTik LTE12 (Quectel E1G12-EA modem) cannot aggregate B28+B3+B3 and neither can the Quectel EG18-EA, which affects the MikroTik LTE18, LTE18 ax, LHG LTE18 and ATL LTE18 routers.  These modems could aggregate B28+B3+B1 before Three refarmed band 1 to 5G, which means if the modem connects on 4G band 28, it will only aggregate one of the band 3 carriers, most likely EARFCN 1700 being the wider 20MHz carrier.

One workaround is to disable band 28 as these modems can aggregate B20+B3+B3.  As band 20 typically has higher congestion than band 28 due to many devices and routers sold in recent years lacking band 28 support, the speeds are likely to be even lower again.  For those lucky enough to get 4G band 7 (not me), these modems can aggregate B3+B7+B28 or B3+B3+B7.  The EG18-EA can also aggregate both band 3 carriers with both band 7 carriers for 4CA. 

From testing B20+B3+B3, the download speeds are much lower than what I typically got with B28+B3+B1 and the upload speed is also lower:

The MikroTik Chateau 5G appears to support B28+B3+B3 going by the cacombos website for its Quectel RG502Q-EA modem.  I'm not sure about the Chateau 5G R16 router as I cannot find the 4G carrier combination capabilities for its RG520F-EU modem.

I have the EG18, the main problem doing B20+B3+B3 is the upload for the B20, make sure the B3 is the primary

Three did some upgrades in my area too, honestly im not complaining . Trough the day im getting speeds like 200/90 with ping around 15ms.Now as im writing this i clocked 123/85. Before the upgrade broadband was barely useable at Sunday evenings. It looks like they added 5g to the mast down the road from my house as signal is super strong.

SINR: 8 dB - This is the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio. A higher dB number indicates a better signal-to-noise ratio.

LTE SINR is always low at weekends, especially in the evenings. Right now it's sitting at 17db. I am roughly 300m from the mast
