While in Dublin for a few days I decided to bring my Vodafone X 5G prepay SIM and topped it up. On my first evening, Wednesday 27th September, I noticed something was up as the speed test spiked over 100Mbps for a second, then fall way back and finished around 50Mbps. The upload was similar, finishing about 10Mbps. As I was travelling with someone, I waited until I reached a high capacity 3.6GHz 5G area (checking with the NetMonster App) and sure enough got roughly 50Mbps down and 10Mbps up test after test. I repeated the upload test with TestMy to test the sustained throughput and it consistently delivered about 10Mbps.
I tried a few speeds until about midnight and had no further test result above around 50Mbps. The 5G tests deliver just slightly higher as the throttling takes about a second to kick in, which skews the test speed a little higher, as shown above.
On Thursday there did not appear any speed limit or throttling throughout the day up until around 6pm as I was getting speeds over 100Mbps both down and up in various places, such as the following example on TestMy:
I left Dublin about 6pm and didn't get a chance to run another test until about 9pm in Cavan and sure enough my speed was being capped around 50Mbps down and 10Mbps up again. The 9.9Mbps TestMy result above was in Cavan about 10:30pm. When I next tested in Donegal about 12:20am, the throttling had finished.
If anyone has a Vodafone 5G bill pay plan or Vodafone Mobile broadband, I suggest running a few speed tests in the evening to see whether these plans are affected.
