Check your PM for information where to find the rest of the former staff  Wink

If you manage to get a Discourse forum up and running I could provide the backup files I have, but when I tried myself I failed to setup a forum where I could restore the backup. However I didn't spend too much time on it.
Strangely the backup from 2020 is 11 GB, while the 2022 backup is only 3 GB Confused

Hello there! So sorry, was just trying to browse Myce with a friend and found it dead. You appear to be the only person on the internet who seems to have backed up Myce that I have been able to find. Would you be so kind as to upload as a DDL or a torrent so that the knowledge isn't to lost time? Both the 2022 and 2020 backup would be ideal! If you have any more questions, please feel free to message me.

I decided to log into Myce today and forums were gone Huh So I did some searching and it sent me here. Sad to see them go but I think burning disks is almost a thing of the past Sad I have a Blue Ray burner and all the goodies to burn 4k with it if I choose and it works but not much reason anymore. I learned about it from Freaks a while back and bought the LG burner that could do it with the right firmware and I used to be very active on several forums.
Nice to see some old friends I haven't chatted with in years and I hope someone still has all the resources to do what we all used to do a lot and enjoy.
I mostly use my home network and plex now and I have recoded most all of my 4k and HD disks onto the hard drives to play over the network. We bought a house back in 2012 and I'm still playing with tech gear and electronics. Looks like CDR Labs has gone quite too. Everything is still up and the news keeps being updated But Ian or anyone else hasn't posted in the forum for a while.

Like others, I found this thread by searching what happened to Myce forums.
At least now I know that it's gone for good.
It's a shame though, the CDFreaks/Myce forums had a ton of info on disc drives and optical media that was not available anywhere else on the internet, not to mention the many knowledgeable people.
Best of luck to you guys!

I use to be a member of CD Freaks / Club Myce for many many many years.
I found this forum searching for the old forum which use to be a blast visiting.

I signed up here with the same username.

Will you have a forum like "The Living Room" where anything goes? Smile

Nice to see a few more familiar usernames. Sadly it looks like what's left of the former Myce front end is disintegrating into a mess of irrelevant articles on dog training, cooking, etc.

That's a great idea. Originally that was what this section "The Branch" was intended to be, i.e. where birds jibber-jabber and tweet on a tree branch with this forum themed around being "in the sticks". I've now renamed it to "The Living Room". Smile

Hi guys, I was very saddened (but not suprised) by the demise of the forums. I'm glad I came across this forum with so many familiar names from the old days...

I registered here because I was also on the Club Myce forum for some time, but since the forum collapsed, I am now looking for a forum similar to Club Myce. Can anyone recommend a forum for CD/DVD drives or even a Discord server dedicated to CD/DVD drives? It may be in this topic, and it may even be in PM

I was previously a volunteer staff member of CD Freaks (formerly Myce), initially a news editor back in 2003 and product reviewer in 2005 for the main site.  CD Freaks originally covered news and reviews of optical drives (CD/DVD/Blu-ray), media, firmware, modding and software (disc burning, audio ripping, DRM circumvention, etc.)  In fact, I ended up with the nickname Editor Seán, hence the name of my main blog.  Later on, the site started covering consumer electronics and was renamed Myce in 2009, which stood for My Consumer Electronics.  I also helped out as a forum moderator and later as a administrator (technical side) taking care of threads, forum layout, cleaning up spam and technical issues.

Back in 2019, the former manager JW sold Myce due to issues that I cannot discuss.  It was bought by Adireto.  Up until then, JW wrote most of the news and regularly kept in touch with staff between organising reviews to discussing ideas, such as the site direction and improvements.

Unlike JW, the new manager made no contact with any of the staff, not even to make an introduction, let alone make any public announcement.  For the first few weeks after the sale, staff hadn't a clue what happened to JW and wondered why the news posting stopped.  While I contacted about the sale shortly after the site was sold, I faced NDA not to discuss about it with anyone until the new manager made an announcement, which never happened.  This was a terrible experience at the time between keeping it a secret and seeing staff ask what's happening.  Eventually one of the staff found out about the sale through a third party site.

Before JW sold the site, everyone apart from JW were volunteers, i.e. no income.  As JW previously took care of the news, the new management decided to hire news editors for the homepage.  Unfortunately, they kept writing about data breaches instead of the data storage related topics the site previously focused on, so I'm not surprised by most of the regular news readers losing interest. The news appeared to have stopped September 2021, which to me was a bad sign as the forum was the only part of the site that remained barely active. The review team abandoned reviewing following the sale back in 2019, frustrated over the lack of communication from the new management, not to mention about the sale done in secrecy.

With nothing happening on the front pages at Myce and barely any activity on the forum, I reckon the ad-revenue fell to the point where the management decided to let the forum hosting expire.

It's really sad to see the loss of the forum, especially with years of technical discussions dating back to 1999.  The forum appears to have gone offline on Saturday 25th, June 2022.

Hi Sean, been ages since we last interacted... it' s been a while that i noticed the forum was down, but didn't have the time to look into it, hoping that at some point it would come back up. Thanks for the explanation here, I needed the closure. Very sad Jan Willem decided to sell the place, as you said he probably had his reasons. What makes me even sadder is the fact that all the knowledge is gone, and that I ll never be able to post in the longest thread ever again.

This seems like a nice place to hang out, hope it works out.

Hi Hemi
JW sold the forum to a man from Venezuela, who abandoned it after a year or so. This is very sad.

Nice to hear from you Hemi. Cool  It was a real shame to lose the CD Freaks / Myce forum, particularly all the technical discussions that are invaluable for anyone collecting old CD/DVD drives, recordable media, etc.

With this forum targeting a very specific niche, getting internet access in rural areas, this forum will never grow to anything like CD Freaks, especially with Starlink becoming more affordable and getting closer to the price of 4G / 5G data plans.  However, it's a nice feeling being able to help people solve technical issues, in this case antennas, cellular router config, etc. instead of CD burners producing coasters, for anyone that remembers those... Big Grin  As I run the forum as a hobby and not for commercial gain, I have no intention of ever running ads, pop-ups, etc. here, particularly as my original 18-year old blog remains ad-free.

I think this is the longest non-technical thread here.  If everyone from CD Freaks / Myce starts showing up and posting here, I'm sure it would beat the longest thread on the former Myce forum, by which stage I would probably need to upgrade to a much larger hosting package!
