How to set up Tenda Nova mesh for wired backhaul - MW5, MW6, etc.
#83
I haven't used the MX12 series, but assuming they function like the MW6 and show <--> in the App, they should be communicating by wired backhaul. One way to test (based on the MW6) is to connect a wired Ethernet device (such as a laptop) to one of the nodes you would like to test and disconnect its LAN2 port temporarily. If the connection drops until the LAN2 is reconnected, this confirms it was using wired backhaul.

Because if I understand correctly you are suggesting that I swap things around so that the living room node is the master node, plugged into a powerline adaptor downstairs that links directly to the router in the roof. This doesn't look like it will work as I apparently cannot connect powerlines across the two floors in the house...
That's a pity about the Powerline adapter not working between the floors. Indeed the signalling usually does not travel well (if at all) beyond RCDs and most newer homes have a separate RCD per floor or even an RCBO (combined circuit breaker and RCD) per circuit.

The only suggestion I have would be to try the self-hosted speed test suggestion and see if you can tweak the speed by moving the "Node 1" and the "Living Room" nodes even slightly such as 10-20cm left/right or up/down a shelf (if on a cabinet), etc. Before I switched mine to wired backhaul a year ago, I found that just moving the node in my bedroom 10cm could make 20-30Mbps difference in the speed tests between the two nodes.

Another possible option would be to see if you can do a wired backhaul from Node 1 (or the 5G router) to the Living room using flat Ethernet cable (such as this). This is just a little wider than telephone wire and can run along skirting, under carpets and doorways, using double-sided tape or clips to secure.
