Sky Mobile - Shane - 10/09/2024

I have noticed that Sky has made the decision to introduce their mobile network in Ireland, offering unlimited calls, texts, and data on the Vodafone network for a monthly fee of €15.

I am curious to see how this development will impact the market, considering the presence of other low-cost options.

RE: Sky Mobile - fullofquestions - 10/09/2024

Very good deal with unlimited data in the EU & UK aswell.

RE: Sky Mobile - Seán - 10/09/2024

This means we finally have a "For life" deal that operates on Vodafone that is equivalent to GoMo and 48 and without the 5Mbps speed limit of Clear Mobile. They also provide 5G, unlike Post Mobile.

From checking their T&C's I could not find any hidden mention of a data limit unlike Eir, GoMo, LycaMobile, PostMobile, etc. so this appears to be uncapped just like Vodafone's own unlimited plans.

It is a very tempting offer especially with Vodafone recently upgrading their masts in the two villages near me, Kilcar and Carrick. Three's mast in Kilcar only operates 4G on band 20 and usually slows down to a crawl in the evening and they have no signal in Carrick. The only issue I see is that I could find no mention of Wi-Fi calling. There is no Vodafone signal at my workplace and I need to be able to receive calls while at work.

Edit: Sky Mobile does have Wi-Fi Calling (in their FAQ) Cool

I signed up today, received email with eSIM almost immediately. 4G and WiFi calling working as expected.

RE: Sky Mobile - Shane - 10/09/2024

How is it, any hiccups along through way?

RE: Sky Mobile - Corklad - 11/09/2024

I’m having issues receiving service messages from Google and Apple iMessage activation.

I got a new number so not a porting issue. Possibly a routing issue with the 089 prefix

RE: Sky Mobile - Seán - 11/09/2024

As Vodafone run its Live APN through a proxy, I would be interested in seeing whether Sky Mobile does the same by running one or both of these tests:
  1. Run a speed test on M-Lab - https://speed.measurementlab.net/
  2. Run a trace route to any pingable address such as 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1

If the latency on M-Lab shows 1ms or Trace Route returns *'s for all but the first few hops, this indicates a transparent proxy.

Thanks for the running the tests, at least they appear to operate without the transparent proxy.  Besides breaking trace route, it also seems to have a slight packet loss as every test I run shows a small transmission loss, whereas your Sky Mobile test shows 0.00% for both the single (NDT) and multi-threaded (MSAK) tests.  I also like your ping, less than half mine (on Ookla). Cool

With Sky Mobile working out almost €7 cheaper than Vodafone prepay, I plan getting it to run our VoIP line over.  I'll wait a while before deciding whether to move my mobile as I really don't want to run into the issues being reported on Boards, particularly with receiving 2FA texts.

Three for comparison, this is with both band 3 carriers active this evening.  I really miss band 1 as it was consistently well over 100Mbps and occasionally breaking the 200Mbps in the evenings back in April when they had band 1 active throughout the month. . .  Sad

RE: Sky Mobile - aleesi - 16/09/2024

I tried to port my number (48) to sky. No issues with 48, but as I already have three for my BB I wanted to have my phone with vodafone network just to diversify Smile

Lot's of teething issues. I was looking to get an eSIM for convenience but my order got automatically cancelled and can't process new orders as I'm redirected to their phone line. I processed a new order over their phone that got cancelled after 10 minutes.

I checked on boards and many ppl reporting issues since last week. wary to port my main number (whatsapp / online banking etc) to be honest, the technical support team hasn't been very helpful so far.

If you're planning on porting your main number perhaps you should consider waiting until things settle.

RE: Sky Mobile - aleesi - 20/09/2024

Well, 3 tries 3 orders automatically canceled due to a system glitch (according to their technical support). I give up.

RE: Sky Mobile - selfbuilder - 21/09/2024

I have been trying out Sky mobile now for a couple of days. I have been using a Vodafone sim in my Huawei router for my broadband at home getting speeds of about 60 to 120 Mbps. I thought Sky mobile would get similar speeds. Alas when I used the Sky sim in the Huawei router it consistently got throttled to 12 Mbps. I tried the sim my a Samsung phone and got speeds similar to Vodafone. It appears Sky are able to detect the type of device the sim is in and throttles the speed. I have tried this over a few days at different times and get the same results. When the sim is in the phone it still feels a bit slower than Vodafone and not as snappy when browsing. I think I’ll cancel the contract within the 14 day cooling off period which I’m not looking forward to as you have to ring Sky customer support to do so.

RE: Sky Mobile - Seán - 21/09/2024

That's a real pity about the speed being throttled in a router, much like it is being treated as the former Vodafone X plan or what Three is performing like this evening here. In this case I will give Sky Mobile a miss as I was considering ordering it to run our VoIP landline over in place of the €20 prepay Vodafone SIM.

The browsing performance difference may be down to the DNS servers being laggy, however, getting 12Mbps consistently with the SIM in the router clearly indicates throttling.

Check if the speed is throttled from a tethered device such as a laptop connected to your phone. If tethering is also throttled to 12Mbps, they are likely checking the TTL value like what Verizon US does, which is where they check if the TTL value is off by 1 due to the additional hop from the router / phone. In this case you can try the following command in a Windows Admin command prompt to change the default TTL to 65 (from 64), so the TTL matches that of data connections from the phone:

netsh interface ipv4 set global defaultcurhoplimit=65

You can undo the change by putting by setting it back to 64, i.e.:

netsh interface ipv4 set global defaultcurhoplimit=64

RE: Sky Mobile - sdaly - 24/09/2024

Did you manage to test what Seán said and are you still getting the 12Mbps throttling?

I always thought (from some EU law) they couldn't throttle specific devices or tethering anymore.

Has anyone else here tested a Sky sim in a router and are you also getting throttled?

I was thinking of getting a Sky sim until I seen this Sad

RE: Sky Mobile - selfbuilder - 24/09/2024

I checked the speed with tethering off a phone and the speed was faster than what I was getting on the Huawei router. I tried both at different times and the speed with the Huawei router was consistently around the 12 Mbps. With a Vodafone sim I was getting full speed on the router.

RE: Sky Mobile - Seán - 24/09/2024

The only other setting that came to mind is check that the APN on the router is set to "mobile.sky", just in case it it is trying to use the Vodafone Live APN or some other default APN. For example, if it's using the Vodafone Live APN, it may be throttled as a speed capped plan (such as older Vodafone unlimited plans).

RE: Sky Mobile - fullofquestions - 24/09/2024

I'm getting much higher speeds with my sky mobile sim in my router. 400 megs right now

Hey @selfbuilder, just to be sure I am reading your comment correctly, tethering in general is supported and works ok when connecting via a phone but when the sim was put into a Huawaei router the speeds were poor right?

Looking to switch from Vodafone and hoping to keep their network, the wifi calling and tethering etc.
wifi calling is confirmed to be there as per @Seans comment above but just wanted to be sure re the tethering as I can't seem to find it in the terms and condtions

Yes tethering worked fine and the speed didn’t seem to be throttled but when the sim was put into a Huawei router with full 4G+ coverage the speed remained at 12Mbps.  Same router with a Vodafone prepay sim gave full speeds of 120Mbps.

Appreciate it, cheers selfbuilder. Went ahead and ordered
