Chateau 5G ax - RG502Q-EA 5G NSA issue - nsmith1979 - 21/02/2024

Hi all,

I've mentioned this issue in a previous post here, but wanted to start a post just focused on this issue.

I've recently changed my 5G router from the Zyxel NR5101 to the Chateau 5G ax, I'm generally very impressed with this router but I'm encountering an issue with 5G NSA so wanted to see if anyone has the same issue and knows of a possible fix I could try.

I'm using Vodafone UK and have a 4G mast about 350m away from me, with the Zyxel NR5101 (which also uses the RG502Q-EA module) I always get 5G NSA from this mast on all the available bands (1,7 & 20). With the Chateau 5G ax I almost never get 5G NSA, it's manage to connect once since I started using it but only held the connection a short time before dropping back to 4G (I've tested with the Zyxel router again just to make sure Vodafone haven't changed something and it still works every time).

I can lock to other cells further away and 5G NSA is available but the 4G signal is obviously much better from the local mast.

Modem firmware versions:

Chateau:   RG502QEAAAR13A03M4G
Zyxel:  RG502QEAACR13A04M4G

I'm assuming it's probably a module firmware issue, I've spoken to Mikrotik but they haven't been a huge help so far.

Does anyone have any ideas on anything else that could be the problem, I'm wondering if I'm missing something?

Did you get to the bottom of this?

I personally use a Zyxel NR7101 (also RG502QEA) with Vodafone UK, but my local cell tower only supports 4G.

My modem firmware version is:

RG502QEAAAR13A02M4G

Zyxel lists a modem firmware upgrade for the NR7101 here:

https://support.zyxel.eu/hc/en-us/articles/4403365084818-Zyxel-5G-Devices-NR-Series-Advanced-Downloads-Firmware-and-other-resources#h_01J7ZRPS4WKP2D0F6D46MPAEQ3

entitled: "RG502QEAAAR11R13A02-R13A04", but my modem rejects it, and I suspect there is a version mismatch because the file 'quectel-project-version' in the upgrade Zip file contains:

Project Name: RG502QEA_ZYXEL_VA
Project Rev : RG502QEAACR13A02M4G_ZYXEL_01.001
Branch  Name: SDX55
Custom  Name: STD
Package Time: 2022-10-08,15:26

Notice the: EAACR vs EAAAR.

No I didn't, as a guess it must be something Zyxel do with the firmware for the RG502Q-EA.

When I was using the Zyxel NR5101 I requested the latest module firmware and they sent me an EAACR image, I'm assuming they make tweaks to the Quectel firmware before they release it for their devices.
